屋根の形 / Shape of roof
切妻 / kirizuma
三角の屋根です。本を開いて、下向きに置いた形です。
Triangle roof, just like putting an open book face-down.
寄棟 / yosemune
切妻屋根の両端に、斜めの面を付けた屋根です。
While Kirizuma has two slopes, Yosemune has two additional slopes on both sides of the two
main
slopes.
入母屋 / irimoya
切妻と寄棟を重ねた形です。
Irimoya is the conbination of Kirizuma and Yosemune.
方行 / hōgyō
４つの三角形を合わせた形です。
Hōgyō is made of four triangular slopes.
京都にある金閣寺と銀閣寺の屋根は、この形です。
Kinkakuji and Ginkakuji in Kyoto have this type of roof.

瓦 / kawara
粘土を焼いて作ります。

茅 / kaya
細長い草を乾かして作ります。
Dried thin, long grass.
スレート / surēto
石をうすく切って作ります。
Tiles made by slicing the stone.

漆喰塗り / shikkui-nuri
漆喰は、岩の粉から作ります。
Shikkui is made from stone powder.
燃えにくいです。
It prevents fire.
家の外の壁や、家の中の壁に使います。
It is used both inside and outside of the house.
下見板張り / shitami-itabari
木の板をはった壁です。
Walls made of wood pieces.
板の下のほうを、下の板に少し重ねます。雨が入りにくいです。
The bottom part of each piece is overlapped on the piece below so that the rain will not
enter.
弁柄 / bengara
赤い土の粉で作ります。
Bengara is made of red soil powder.
壁や木に塗ると、腐りにくくなります。
It keeps walls and trees from rotting.
沖縄の首里城にも使われています。
Bengara is also used for Shurijo in Okinawa.
庭 / Garden
手水鉢 / chōzu-bachi
手を洗うところです。
It is for washing hands.
庭の飾りでもあります。
It is also a decoration of the garden.
鹿威し / shishi-odoshi
もともとは、動物を脅かすために作られました。
It is originally for scare away animals.
今は庭の飾りです。音も楽しみます。
Nowadays it is a decoration of the garden. People enjoy the sound, too.
灯篭 / toro
庭の明かりです。
It is a light for the garden.
石で作ることが多いです。中にろうそくを入れます。
It is often made of stones. You put a candle inside it.

井戸 / ido
地下から水を取るために地面に掘った深い穴です。
It is a deep hole to take water under the ground.
台所の近くにあることが多いです。
It is often near the kitchen.
