①三和土 / tataki

玄関の戸を開けると、三和土があります。三和土には靴をはいて入ります。
When you open the entrance door, there is Tataki. You enter Tataki with shoes. -
②上がり框 / agari-gamachi

三和土より高いところです。靴を脱いでから、ここに上がります。
Agarigamachi is higher than Tataki. You take off shoes before stepping in here.
和室 / Japanese room
和室は、普通、畳の部屋です。
A Japanese room is usually Tatami room.
ひとつの和室を、いろいろな目的で使うことができます。お客さんと会ったり、家族が食事をしたり、夜は布団を敷いて寝たりします。
A Japanese room can be used for different purposes; meeting with guests, having meals, and sleeping
at night.
茶の間 / chanoma
家族の部屋です。
It is a family room.
たとえば、家族がここで食事をします。
For example, the family has meals here.
台所の近くにあることが多いです。
It is often near the kitchen.
座敷 / zashiki
畳を敷いた部屋で、特にお客さんのために使います。
It is a Tatami room especially for guests.
床の間 / tokonoma
座敷の中で、美術品や花を飾るところです。
It is a place for putting arts and flowers in zashiki.
他 / Other
台所 / daidokoro
食事を作る場所です。
It is a place for cooking.
食べ物が腐らないように、家の北側に作ることが多いです。
It is often in the north side of the house to prevent the food from going bad.
「お勝手」とも言います。
It is also called "Okatte".
縁側 / engawa
部屋と庭の間の、板を敷いてあるところです。
Narrow wooden floor between the room and the garden.
縁側にいると、家の中にいるような感じもしますし、家の外にいるような感じもします。
When in Engawa, it feels like being inside and outside the house at the same time.
広縁 / hiroen
幅が広い縁側です。
Hiroen is a wide engawa.
濡れ縁 / nure-en
縁側が戸の外にあるときは、「濡れ縁」と言います。
When Engawa is outside, it is called "Nure-en" (Wet-Engawa).
